It was the end of a long long week. The FSA (Financial Services Authority) had been in to regulate us, nothing to do with our bowels or the Food Standards Agency but it was gruelling. The only light at the end of the tunnel was the thought of a long communist era queue outside a shop at the freezing start of November. Worse still, the shop was in Larne. For those who have never heard of Larne, the place where I was married, in the eastern shores of Northern Ireland, it is said that there are only two good things in Larne:
1. The boat to Scotland.
2. The road out.
Well I just want to repudiate that statement right now, because there is a third item I?d like to add… another good thing in Larne:
3. The remaining 19 iPhones in the shop after I was there on launch night.
Nowhere else in the country at 5:30pm was the launch party looking like this:

The shutters were down, I waited for a while eager to have craic with my fellow enthusiasts. An elderly gentlemen approached, tried the door… I muscled in on his attempt to bunk the queue but he hadn?t even heard of the iPhone. I spat on him and threw him to the dogs.
5:45pm – My friend arrived for moral support, anticipation grew as the crowd of the 2 of us (only 1 buying) watched the shutters slowly lift:

It was a slow strip tease, we were shivering with … well, the cold. I phoned two friends also in queues around the country – Lisburn had 15 and promotional girls, Worthing had 40 and banter. Larne had nothing, nothing except the prize.
6:00pm – Two other guys arrived. Phew – I wasn?t the only idiot in the Eastern part of Antrim! (But they were in looking for a Sony Ericcson).

(Max O?Malley, visibly excited)
Sure enough at 6:02 they put us (I mean, me) out of our/my misery. The three retail assistants who had prepared all afternoon since 3pm for this monumental occasion had to open their shop until 10pm to serve, just me. I felt blessed. I tried to pretend I didn?t know very much about the iPhone and tried not to correct the manager. I didn?t want to come across like a geek. None of us that queued that night felt we deserved the mocking of the crowd, we hardly could believe ourselves that we were doing it.
After crossing the shop assistant?s palm with considerable money and various attempts to get the credit card system to work (Carphone Warehouse servers couldn?t cope with the UK?s iPhone loving crowd) I walked out of the shop into the cold Larne air with my precious.
I love her and I will tell more of her next time.

This just makes me so happy. There is no shame in this, i tell you, no shame.
ok, a little bit maybe

Poor staff. It was much the same in Lisburn. A largish queue outside the O2 shop but very very few outside Carphone Warehouse.

Loving the line, “I didn’t want to come across like a geek.” There was definately visible excitement in your eyes, please post a photo on January 15th 2008 when iPhone 2.0 is released

iPhone has a serious competition with the Google Android mobile OS. This video shows cool apps that can be built with the SDK that was released recently

oh wow! software that people can use to make good things… is that the first time we’ve ever had software??? Altogether now… its the user experience that ultimately matters. It looks great, superb idea from Google – now we can hand it over to the programmers and marketing people and see what a dog’s dinner they can make out of it.

why was this an iphone launch party, were there crazy pills there? iT came out in NYC months ago & people flying as far as Sydney for the bar. Way wait out in the cold though, even if it wasn’t the real “party” you show tenacity and you gotta love that.

I’d denounce your geekyness (?) to the pits of hell if i wasn’t kind of the same, just slightly more concerned for my self-image…
oh and surely the problem with the ferry out of larne is that it ends up in stranraer. i once spent a night in stranraer. Oh dear lord…

thunk – i think this whole post is based on the ‘launch party of 1ish’ gag. not sure oyu get it.
Kr… how can you talk about google as a competetor.. they havent really even done anything… as max says… SDK? big whoop! Nokia are the competition … the N95 8gb came out pretty highly in a C5 gadget show test… for me its not as dramatic and imaginative though – which counts for a lot
November 14, 2007 at 11:27 pm |
The N95 looks quite nice, and there’s no doubt about it, Nokia’s rock for texting. However, the N95 doesn’t have 8Gb of memory. It has 160Mb of internal memory and it supports a microSD card of up to 2Gb. GPS is cool though.

ok. I am not in a fight to see who has the best phone. I am tapping this happily on my iPhone while watching tv and having several beers. I read your emails and approved your comments easily and without discomfort on my iPhone. If you have a device that pleases you similarly good. Mine gives me pleasure as well as functionality. That is my experience.

Awww crap, Qmonkey has sent me conclusive evidence that there’s an 8Gb version of the N95, shoulda googled it a bit better! Seems like Voxo is taking a bit of a pointy though, or maybe it was just the beer talking. Did you have your mate stella round or was it just a bud?
November 15, 2007 at 1:03 pm |
oim Irish it was Caffreys. I shall endeavour to google the N95 in the interests of discussion

the n95 8gb gps is ‘the dogs’ as they say…. but its quite dear… not as dear as an ipone but getting there… also.. in my opinion quite heafty (still smaller than ye olde 1996 phones though!)…. also.. i like that it comes with n-gage… almost doubles as a psp … stereo blue tooth head set. i think i;’ll just get a e65 then consider iphone mrk2 in a years time…. or at least see where iphone moves the market too.
you see… i thikn i WOULD i phone… but i dont like being tied to itunes and every other macness in and the mac family… i want to be free not tied … in saying that… if i won an iphone or was given it… i would certinly use it!!

I’m not one to moan, but it annoys me how everyone talks about being tied into O2 or Mac stuff. If you get a Sony mobile, you’ll be tied to using their crappy software, and you’ll not be able to use this software on a mac. If you want the N95 8Gb you have to switch to Vodaphone – it’s exclusive to them at the moment, you’ll also be tied in for 12-18 months depending on tariff choice. Nokia has also just opened the Nokia Music Store, are you not going to buy a Nokia now because you’ll be tied into this?
Contract phones have always been tied to networks for at least 12 months, more recently 18. Manufacturers have always bundled their own software with the device, often excluding mac users. I don’t really see how you’re anymore tied with an iphone, they give you the phone and the software to work with it – same as every other phone maker. The only difference is that in 18months, when your contract is up you MIGHT have to stay with O2, but by then you MIGHT want a newer phone anyway or they MIGHT be unlockable.

Grump on Grumpyman! I had a sony ericcson until the precious arrived recently. Could I use the software with my Mac? nope! is iTunes cross platform? Yes. There are many twists and turns on this whole tied in thing.

iTunes is not cross platform if you use Linux and have a Nokia 63… I dunno… some other numbers that you inherited from someone else. Hmmph.
I like that you made an orderly queue of 1 though, and took photos and things. Stylish.
